چکیده

results imply some transient retention of the toxinsecreting stem cells. Unfortunately, the investigators were unable to detect viable stem cells in the resection cavity after 72 hours by bioluminescence. Many potential agents against glioblastoma will be challenged by drug stability and poor blood-brain barrier permeability. Using neural stem cells to secrete tailored tumorspecific toxins or other biological agents within the resection cavity in direct contact with residual tumor may help overcome these obstacles. Although there are significant barriers to the clinical use of either autologous or nonautologous neural stem cells for the treatment of glioblastoma, Stuckey and colleagues present important in vivo evidence of the feasibility of engineering neural stem cells to secrete targeted cytotoxins that affect tumor progression. Motor Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury Enhanced by Strengthening Corticospinal Synaptic Transmission

The corticospinal tract is an important target for motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) in animals and humans. Voluntary motor output depends on the efficacy of synapses between corticospinal axons and spinal motoneurons, which can be modulated by the precise timing of neuronal spikes. Using noninvasive techniques, we developed tailored protocols for precise timing of the arrival of de...

Axonal remodeling in the corticospinal tract after stroke: how does rehabilitative training modulate it?

Stroke causes long-term disability, and rehabilitative training is commonly used to improve the consecutive functional recovery. Following brain damage, surviving neurons undergo morphological alterations to reconstruct the remaining neural network. In the motor system, such neural network remodeling is observed as a motor map reorganization. Because of its significant correlation with function...

Brain regions important for recovery after severe post-stroke upper limb paresis

Background The ability to predict outcome after stroke is clinically important for planning treatment and for stratification in restorative clinical trials. In relation to the upper limbs, the main predictor of outcome is initial severity, with patients who present with mild to moderate impairment regaining about 70% of their initial impairment by 3 months post-stroke. However, in those with se...

Changes in descending motor pathway connectivity after corticospinal tract lesion in macaque monkey

Damage to the corticospinal tract is a leading cause of motor disability, for example in stroke or spinal cord injury. Some function usually recovers, but whether plasticity of undamaged ipsilaterally descending corticospinal axons and/or brainstem pathways such as the reticulospinal tract contributes to recovery is unknown. Here, we examined the connectivity in these pathways to motor neurons ...

Contralesional axonal remodeling of the corticospinal system in adult rats after stroke and bone marrow stromal cell treatment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Motor recovery after stroke is associated with neuronal reorganization in bilateral hemispheres. We investigated contralesional corticospinal tract remodeling in the brain and spinal cord in rats after stroke and treatment of bone marrow stromal cells. METHODS Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to permanent right middle cerebral artery occlusion. Phosphate-buffered s...

Axonal remodeling of the corticospinal tract in the spinal cord contributes to voluntary motor recovery after stroke in adult mice.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We sought to demonstrate the contribution of axonal remodeling of the corticospinal tract (CST) in the spinal cord to functional outcome after stroke. METHODS Bilateral pyramidotomy (BPT) or sham-BPT was performed in mice with transgenic yellow fluorescent protein labeling in the CST subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Foot-fault and single pellet reac...
